Cooking Together, Cooking Forever starts next week!

by on January 19, 2012

Hi families! This is Neyza, ICS’s meal program coordinator. Teacher Jenny has been kind enough to share her Family Engagement blog with me so that I can easily keep in touch with you throughout the PTA’s exciting Cooking Together, Cooking Forever challenge.

If you haven’t registered for the program yet, I encourage you to do so right now! Simply visit the website, click on “user signup” at the top, and create an account using our school’s invitation code: 48C2WY. You will then be able to access the cooking tutorials and recipes that will be released over the coming months.

Through the program you will have the opportunity to learn simple, family-friendly cooking techniques that will bring you closer together and lay the groundwork for a lifetime of healthy eating for your children!

I have had a wonderful time this winter visiting classrooms and teaching students about healthy eating habits using the Choose MyPlate & USDA guidelines for a healthy diet.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans describe a healthy diet as one that:

• Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products;
• Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts; and
• Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars.

If you are eager to start cooking together right away, the Choose MyPlate website offers many great recipes to try!

Let’s kick off the event with a fun activity of our own–in the comments, post your family’s favorite quick, healthy, weeknight meal! Ready, set, GO!

    Put two boneless/skinless chicken breasts (frozen or thawed) in crock pot. Add one jar of your favorite salsa, one can black beans, and one package frozen corn. Cook on low 8 hours. Chicken will shred instantly upon stirring. Serve over brown rice, inside tortillas, with lots of fixings–however you like! We call it “salsa chicken”. Can easily double recipe, too.

    I’m glad to see that one of our go-to weeknight meals is featured in the HUNDREDS of veggie-friendly recipes on this “CT,CF” website:

    Patatas Asadas (Baked Potatoes) – CT,CF calls them “Loaded, Twice-Baked Potatoes” –
    & there certainly are loads of possibilities for what you can put in them… Enjoy!

    ¡Buen provecho!

      It sounds good! My daughter loves “papitas” and this is a good way to introduce potatoes not fried but baked and delicious too!
